New Zealand's Neat!

My parents and I spent a few weeks in New Zealand-North and South Island.

We flew into Auckland and we rented a campervan to drive all round north and south island and we were able to leave the van at a location in the South island where our trip ended.

We saw the Auckland Sky Tower which is very impressive by night when it is all lit up! There's lovely views from the top also.

From there we went further north to the most Northern tip of NZ-Cape Reinga, where two seas meet:Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. It is a pretty impressive sight and on a windy day the waves look phenomenal!

Near Auckland is a village called Matakohe and this village contains the 'Kauri Museum' and is worth a look if you're up around the kauri area, which you should be! The Kauri is the largest tree in New Zealand and is around 3rd on the list of tallest trees in the world. The largest kauri around to date is Tane Mahuta and is in the Waipoua forest. This is definitely worth a visit as these trees are gigantic!

<---- This is me standing on a stump of a Kauri tree. That's one tree you defo could not hug!

In the North we drove through many interesting places- one specific place we visited was Rotorua, a lovely but really smelly town. It's smelly because of the sulphur from the volcanic activity. I was not impressed by the smell, especially when we decided to park up for the night right beside the geothermal village called 'waiotapu'. There were gases rising up from bubbling mud just beside our van-really nasty! Once inside the village the next morning, I kind of forgot about the smell because the geysers, the baths and the general atmosphere in the village was deadly! The locals were demonstrating how they cook in deep pits in the earth, just like what I remember learning about Irish ancestors doing except slightly different due to the lack of volcanic activity in Ireland.

We drove all the way down to Wellington where we got the ferry over to the South Island to meet our relatives for Christmas on a typical NZ farm.

<---- Dad chilling on the farm on xmas day!

I was and still am not a keen walker but we all did a really thrilling one day hike through Volcanic terrain 'The Tongariro Crossing'. It was breathtaking, there were such contrasts: minty blue pools high up in the mountainous area called the 'emerald lakes',snow on some peaks, desert sands and red craters around. It was an amazing experience!

This is not my pic but I will soon add some of mine to the mix-technical difficulties!

I may think of more but for now I will leave it at that and post the information links on the info page!

Australia continued..it is a big place!

It is a huge country and I have only seen pieces of it. So I will continue on with where I have been and what we did when we were there! Photos really do help jog the memories!

We went to a place called Kuranda, a village in a rainforest near Cairns (link is on the link page)We got there by train, a very scenic ride!We did some walks around the forest (great photo ops-I started liking wildlife photography then and there) and gandered at the stalls (there are some nice stalls where you can get lovely prints of native animals; the platypus and the kangaroo. I being a young teenager, found 'Fanny O'Reilly's Irish bar and grill' hilarious-there isn't a corner of the world we haven't invaded and plonked an Irish bar down as evidence!

The Taronga zoo in Sydney is a must see for those animal lovers..I personally couldn't wait to see the koalas and I was not disappointed! They were adorable! We got there by cable car, getting great views on the way!The Australians really have transport down to a tee, the journeys to places in Oz are often more exciting than the destination!

In Sydney harbour there is plenty to do, we chose to take a trip on a sailing boat, where they may ask you to partake in crew duties. My dad loved this, he loves anything to do with water!you go under the harbour bridge and see the city from the outside.

Awesome Australia!

The fabulous port..Port Douglas and the boat we went out on to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef-unfortunately didn't see Nemo that day!
When I return I will definitely be scuba diving so I can stay under for longer..the reef is out of this world!

Beautiful serene beaches..just a couple of the many we saw!

My first trip that I can properly remember...

I went to Canada, near Vancouver when I was around 6. It was a memorable trip, we went to visit our relatives that were living there at the time. The journey didn't start off so well. On the flight over to Canada my eardrum burst and I was in major pain, screaming and puking as one does in that situation! We eventually arrived and I was brought to the doc, given medicine and awarded with a cool doll for my troubles! The only pics I have are printed ones,so if I find a scanner I can put them up but for now I'll just describe it to you. It was a great trip, Dad had bought a Harley over there and was getting it shipped back to Ireland. We, that's me and my older brother, were totally integrated into the lifestyle straight away, making honey loop necklaces in this Summer camp with our cousins and having water fights.I remember there were a lot of totem poles in the local parks.
